ON SOFA #3: SCREENING OF DUST & METAL AND CONVERSATION WITH DIRECTOR ESTHER JOHNSON
On an early summer evening, we gathered for an intimate film screening and conversation with director Esther Johnson. It has been three years since Dust & Metal was first screened in Vietnam at Ngụy Như Kon Tum Hall, accompanied by a live musical performance by Xinh Xo. For many audience members at this event, however, it was their first encounter with the film.

Dust & Metal invites viewers to trace the history of a vehicle deeply familiar to many Vietnamese people, while also reflecting on urban development and imagining possible futures. During the discussion, Esther Johnson shared insights into working with archival film materials at the Vietnam Film Institute under the restrictive conditions of the Covid-19 period, as well as the creative process behind the film together with her collaborators.

Our sincere thanks to Esther Johnson and her wonderful collaborators – sound producer Nhung Nguyễn and project coordinator Linh Trang from TPD centre – for joining us in organising this screening and conversation. Thank you as well to everyone who spent the evening with us on the sofa.
