A House Amid the Weather of Human Life: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Architecture
Last Saturday evening, On Sofa #6 welcomed Tản Mạn Kiến Trúc for the collective’s first public talk in Hanoi.
Opening the programme, Nguyên and Hiếu introduced the theme and shared why they chose the title A House Amid the Weather of Human Life. Drawing from their research, Tản Mạn Kiến Trúc invited us to see the house as a social marker – one that can be read through layers of history, culture, and everyday life.

Through stories of house orientation, waterways, verandas, curtains, and decorative motifs, the image of the Southern Vietnamese house gradually came into focus, carrying the traces of both people and time. In a history where archives are often incomplete and written records remain scarce, the house itself becomes a vessel of memory, reflecting the material and spiritual lives of those who inhabited it. To read a house is to unfold the layers of time – to trace the lives of those who once lived there, the eras that have passed through it, and the worlds that can never return.
